Three illuminated sculptures have been installed at the Public Safety Center. The work, titled “Insignia,” represents the motto of the Beaverton Police Department: Courage, Compassion and Integrity. The series emphasizes community engagement and interactivity, taking the form of abstract Beaverton Police badges. The work, created by artist Blessing Hancock, is made from stainless steel and illuminated by LED lights that are programmed to change colors. Within the sculptures are words which reflect the BPD’s motto and were collected from the local community.
“We are extremely thankful to Blessing Hancock for the amazing art pieces that are displayed on the plaza. What makes them even more special is that our community contributed to this project, making our building and the plaza a place where everyone is welcome and can feel safe,” says Beaverton’s Police Chief Ronda Groshong.
The artwork is located in the Public Safety Center’s outdoor plaza. A community engagement effort for plaza naming ran through the month of March. A name-selection committee made up of community volunteers will now go through all the name suggestion submissions, which follow certain parameters, and will present 3-5 options to City Council for consideration in June. The public unveiling of the plaza name will be held sometime in August.
